Telling it Like it Is 01/25/15 (more...)

Keep accurate records of your bets. Document the logic behind your bets. Reviewing the outcome of your bets after the fact is almost as important as your initial handicapping that led to the bet. Did you win based on solid handicapping? Did the game play out the way you thought it would? Did you win despite yourself or did you absorb a bad beat? Be honest with yourself. This is how you improve and stop making the same mistakes over and over again.
Accept the fact bad beats are inevitable. They will never go away and they do not even out.

High Profile Events 01/11/15 (more...)

The recreational bettor although much more astute than 10-15 years ago still falls victim to a common mistake. Over betting highly publicized games like the Super Bowl, March Madness, NCAAF bowl games etc etc. If you are in this purely for entertainment that is one thing if you are in it to make money those games rarely will produce value.

Beware Small Sample Sizes 01/04/15 (more...)

It is easy to draw conclusions off of small sample sizes. Be aware this leads to BIG mistakes. How many times have you asked yourself how can a team look so good one night and then so bad the very next night against a lesser opponent?
The answer is easier than you think. We are in the business of predicting outcomes of sporting events played by humans. Humans by nature are unpredictable especially in the short term. The shorter the time spans the more volatile the results will be. Everyone has off nights.

Last Day Sports Betting Year 2014 BRING on 2015! 12/28/14 (more...)

I know the actual calendar has 3 days left in 2014 however for sports betting bookkeeping purposes today represents the last betting day. We close off every week on Sunday nights. We track our overall stats as well as the same stats broken down for each individual sport. The overall stats are closed off and started anew every calendar year while the individual sports stats are closed off when that sport ends for a particular season.

Coaching Changes 12/21/14 (more...)

We will use NCAAB as the focus today since this season is a few weeks old but the concept applies to every sport.
There are 351 division 1 basketball teams. 47 of them have a new coach. That is a huge 13.3% turnover in just 1 year.
The task is to analyze weigh the impact of each of these changes on the respective teams.

Let's Go Bowling 12/14/14 (more...)

Over the next several weeks the college football bowl games will be played culminating with new the 4 team (for now) playoff format to determine a champion.
Handicapping bowl games is a totally different beast than handicapping games during the regular season.
Look to play ON double digit underdogs in the minor bowl games. If you are a big favorite in a game like this it indicates more was expected from you this season and this bowl game is a disappointment. The heavier the underdog is the greater the motivation and reward to actually be playing in a bowl game.

Chasing 12/07/14 (more...)

Remember never never chase losses. Wait for your next game of value regardless if it is 5 minutes or 5 days away. Chasing losses will result in digging yourself a bigger hole. Good or bad, start each day 0-0 move on from the previous day.
If you went 0-10 yesterday you cannot try and make it up in one day especially if there is no value. Conversely you cannot be afraid to pull the trigger either if your handicapping has found some games with value.

5 Tools for Your Handicapping Chest 11/30/14 (more...)

Over the course of your sports betting career, you’re going to lose a good chunk of wagers for a million different reasons .A missed field goal. A meaningless 3-pointer. A wild pitch. An empty-net goal. An injury to the star quarterback. The list goes on and on…
Some of those bet-busting phenomena are out of your hands, but some losing bets leave you smacking yourself in the forehead wondering, “What the hell was I thinking?!”
Betting against streaks

Fan vs. Bettor 11/23/14 (more...)

I assume all of you are in this to make money either as a business or a hobby. I also assume like myself you love to watch as many games as you possibly can in every sport you bet. Not only games you have bet on but games that provide scouting opportunities for potential future bets of teams to bet on or against.
