Rick Steel's betting tips

The Grapevine will contain my week-to-week sports betting analysis on the sports we handicap and the sports betting industry.

Seeing is Believing 05/12/13 (more...)

So many things can happen over the course of a game that produces results that are not properly measured in a box score or game re-cap. There is no substitute for watching the games. Not only the games you have bet but as many others as possible as well. View all games from a betting perspective for future possible investments not as a casual fan.
Get yourself a PVR if you do not have one. It is an excellent investment for this business. It will allow you to watch games in less than 30 minutes.

Adapt To Succeed 05/05/13 (more...)

Handicapping is a constantly evolving process. Year by year season by season even game by game. Some people are under the impression handicapping is nothing more than a number crunching formula driven exercise which punches out plays. Nothing could be further from the truth. If the better team won and covered every game if the better pitcher won every game we would all be rich.
One of the biggest mistakes made in handicapping is to over-react to one result. Seeing a team do well in a game and drawing conclusions will commonly find you on the wrong side in the next game.

Responsibility 04/14/13 (more...)

Keep accurate records of your bets, the logic behind your bets and the results of your bets. Did you win based on solid handicapping? Did the game play out the way you thought it would? Did you win on luck this time it will happen or did you sustain a bad beat. Be honest with yourself. If you do not keep accurate records of ALL your wagers you will lie to yourself. It is just human nature we have selective memories.
Accept the fact bad beats are inevitable everyone experiences them they will never go away and they do NOT even out.

1,000 Marbles & the Laws of Probability 04/07/13 (more...)

You are never as hot as you think you are. Your luck is never as bad as you think it is. You are NEVER due to win. Now that we have this out of the way we can get to the keys to the issue. Gamblers think when they get hot they are invulnerable. They think the laws of probability do not apply to them.

MLB Begins IMPORTANT Betting Instructions 03/31/13 (more...)

The very long Mlb season begins tonight when the call PLAY BALL will be screamed out for real the first time this season.
Baseball is our most important sport year in year out. It has the most events at 2,430 + playoffs and hence represents the most dollars bet of any sport for a year. Baseball historically provides us on average the highest R.O.I.than any other sport.

High Profile Events 03/24/13 (more...)

The recreational bettor although much more astute than 10-15 years ago still falls victim to a common mistake. Over betting highly publicized TV games like the Super Bowl, March Madness, NCAAF bowl games etc. If you are in this purely for entertainment that is one thing if you are in it to make money those games rarely will produce value.

Chasing 03/17/13 (more...)

Remember never never chase losses. Wait for your next game of value regardless if it is 5 minutes or 5 days away. Chasing losses will result in digging yourself a bigger hole. Good or bad you have to move on from the previous day. You cannot let a prior day effect a current day.
If you went 0-10 yesterday you cannot try and make it up in one day especially if there is no value. Conversely you cannot be afraid to pull the trigger either if your handicapping has found some games with value.

Fan vs. Bettor 03/10/13 (more...)

I assume all of you are in this to make money either as a business or a hobby. I also assume like myself you love to watch as many games as you possibly can in every sport you bet. Not only games you have actually bet on but games that provide scouting opportunities for potential future bets of teams to bet on or against.
