Rick Steel's betting tips

The Grapevine will contain my week-to-week sports betting analysis on the sports we handicap and the sports betting industry.

Let's Go Bowling 12/23/12 (more...)

Over the next several weeks the college football bowl games will be played culminating with the Alabama Notre Dame match up.
Look to play on double digit underdogs in the minor bowl games. If you are a big favorite in a game like this it indicates more was expected from you this season and this bowl game is a disappointment. The worse the team is the greater the motivation and reward to actually be playing in a bowl game.

Increasing Your Unit 12/16/12 (more...)

A few weeks back when we discussed having too much money I said I would come back and talk about how to effectively increase your unit.
Remember a unit is 2% of your bankroll. Your bankroll is the unencumbered amount of money you have allocated to this business. It is not money you need for essentials such as food or housing. Your unit is the amount you RISK on each play not the amount you can win. Flat betting risking the same amount on each game in my opinion is the only way to long term success in this business.

NFL Tidbits 11/11/12 (more...)

Awareness of scheduling is important in all sports but especially the NFL. The brutal physical nature of the sport makes it impossible for teams to effectively compete every week. Look for teams coming off a bye especially later in the year. Coaches have more time to prepare and players have more time to recuperate. Look for good teams that have a big rivalry game on tap next week while they have to face a team in the current week that offers very little motivation. That team may win but rarely cover.

November College Football 11/04/12 (more...)

2 months into the season stats become more meaningful teams play more to their averages experience or lack thereof becomes less critical.
Look for teams that were not very good in September and October but who have not quit. Look for teams that can effectively run the ball as the weather gets worse and throwing the ball becomes more difficult. Defenses that were bad early get worse. It is much tougher to play defense and when fatigue sets in and the season is lost it is difficult to summon the energy to make stops.
