Better to be Lucky than Good? 06/29/14 (more...)

The above adage does not apply to sports betting. Luck is short term it cannot sustain you. Being good will have you profitable long term. Good bettors are going to get “unlucky” sometimes for extended periods of time. Accept it handle it and move on.
The bad beats do not even out. The better bets you make the more unlucky you will be. Most people do not get this concept. Understand you will be on the right side more than the wrong side and win because of your value handicapping. Therefore the short term luck factor can only work against you.
Bad referee calls, turnovers, bullpen blowing lead, bad penalties, losing in the last minute etc. Bad beats are very difficult to handle especially when they occur in a flurry. How you handle these beats will determine your long term success in this business.
I know it is much easier to say than to do but you really have to let these tough beats roll off of you and move on to the next menu. Take 5 minutes at the end of a win to celebrate or a loss to commiserate and then clear your head. Do not let it affect your future handicapping or worse allow you to go on “tilt” to borrow a poker term. Just realize it is the tax we pay a sort of cost of doing business.
